IRISH WHISKEY ONLINE

Irish Whiskey goes back in time for many hundreds of years and to most peoples surprise, Irish Whiskey not Scotch Whisky was the most sold and exported around the World. Ireland had over one thousand distilleries registered back in the early nineteenth century and to highlight even more Irish Whiskies dominent market position, for in just the USA at that time Ireland had over four hundred brands of whiskey on sale.

Irish whiskey is very different from Scotch Whisky in both the ingredients that can be used and also the distilling processes. Irish Whiskey comes in four main formats depending on the type of grain used and the distillation process.

Irish variants include: IRISH GRAIN WHISKEY…….this is produced from the continuous still process in a column or coffey still. A variety of grains can be used and most of the whiskey produced is used in blended whiskey by mixing with pot still produced whiskey.

SINGLE MALT IRISH WHISKEY…….these whiskies are made by only using malted barley distilled in a pot still within a single distillery, the process being similar to Scotch Whisky.

SINGLE POT STILL IRISH WHISKEY……..is made from a blend of malted and unmalted barley, only distilled in a pot still only within a single distillery. The use of two styles of barley is thought by many lovers of Irish Whiskey to be simply the best.

BLENDED IRISH WHISKEY……….is a blend of any of the above previously mentioned Irish Whiskey forms. Blended Irish Whiskey is by far the most popular whiskey made in Ireland, both in volume and variety of choice. With many new boutique distilleries coming on line over the next five years or so, more of the other three styles will become available to the benefit of all.

Alexander Hadleigh Wine Merchants, Southampton, Hampshire, UK do offer a full and varied selection of Irish Whiskey, including all four styles. Our fine list of Irish Whiskey will match and suit most budgets and are available online or from our Southampton Wine Shop.
